When you buy a web hosting plan, you pay some money for it every month. To be specific, you pay for maintaining and administrating the web server, for replacing hardware if needed, for keeping the server online 24/7, for the security of all your files and data, and for the work of all people who do this. It is quite possible to turn your own PC into a web server. But it is usually cheaper and more reliable to let the professionals do this work for you.
There are several types of web hosting.
An average web site does not require all web server’s resources to function properly. Common web servers are able to host hundreds of web sites at a time. That is how shared hosting appeared. Shared web hosting simply means hosting several web sites on the same server. The majority of web sites are hosted through shared web hosting plans. The reason is that shared hosting is much cheaper than any other kind. Shared hosting is sometimes also called virtual hosting.
If you have a powerful web site, you might want to have an entire web server all for yourself. It is also more secure not to share the server with other customers. This way you do not have to worry that someone could crash the web server accidentally or on purpose. Dedicated web hosting is renting the entire server by single client. There is also semi-dedicated hosting when a server is divided between no more than four customers. It is quite obvious that dedicated hosting always cost much more than the previous type of web hosting.
