Shifting Website Traffic Across Hosting
November 19th, 2008 by admin | Filed under Hosting. If your site has a lot of visitors everyday, it will consume a lot of bandwidth. As many hosting companies limited the bandwidth usage. You might need to pay extra for additional bandwidth usage. Especially for images oriented website, which can easily use up all available bandwidth.
To overcome this, you may simply use multiple hosting programs and servers, along with an site redirection script to mirror, shifting the weight of the traffic across the board.
Example: mydomain.com/index.php, mydomain.com/index01.php, mydomain.com/index02.php
or multiple domains like this: mydomain.com , mydomain01.com , mydomain02.com
The difference is in the hosting program, as if they will let you ‘ mirror ‘ the same domain information or if you need an independent, ‘ unique ‘ domain name. That’s the way of getting around that issue. If they allow mirrors, then you can clone your site on multiple servers and just label the index pages to direct traffic flux as needed.
If they require an independent/unique domain, then you can go with the second option.
All of my hosting programs offer ‘ unlimited ‘ bandwidth as well. Of course, I understand that this isn’t true because it will always have a cap of some level. However, it is a great option to go with because in using the mirrors like this, if you have a couple of hosting companies that offer this style of unlimited access within reason from their server, you can use this to your advantage by spreading the stream of traffic across the board in this manner, never peaking any one server out.
This method eliminates the overcharges and fees of bandwidth caps as well as always leaves you an alternative source for posting your content and sites should for any reason the terms of one change, as they all do over time, for better or worse.
I have a few hosting services that I use. As for my cost, the overhead is $25/month combined for my hosting.
