Why the Internet is So Cool

My personal story

I love the internet. Without it, I would be a completely different person, living a very different life. My entire world revolves around, as I’m sure it does with countless numbers of other people too.

Here’s a shortlist of things that have only come about because of it:

- I wouldn’t have met the friends I have now
- I wouldn’t have the boyfriend I’ve been with for many years
- I wouldn’t live in the house I live in now
- I wouldn’t have the job I have now

Many years ago, I became a huge fan of a band, who at the time were not particularly mainstream or well known. But just as I was finding my way around the new world wide web, i stumbled upon a community devoted to the band. It was a thriving forum, and it was the most exciting thing I’d ever found in my life. I spent 2 or 3 years connecting with like-minded people and met lots of friends which are still friends on MSN and Skype today, nearly 10 years later.

I met the boyfriend I’m with on a dating website. At the time, this was still a bit controversial and frowned upon, for whatever reason. Today it’s very common-place to meet people who also found the love of their life online.

I found the house I live in on a popular house-listing website! I probably would not have taken note of its listing in the newspaper, as the chosen main photos did not sell the house well. By seeing it online in combination with all the other photos taken, I could see this was a brilliant house.

I have the job I have today for 2 reasons – it involves using the internet, and I found the job itself on the internet! A double whammy of epic proportions.

Other reasons the www so cool

While I dislike social networks like Twitter and Facebook, I know that for millions of people across the world, it’s an absolute lifeline, and the only way to keep in touch with others. It has a massive impact on the sharing of information, and the success of the recent uprisings in the middle east have been very much down to social networks.

Youtube and similar video websites have allowed us to watch almost anything we want – funny animal videos, clips of TV shows we’d nearly forgotten, amazing feats by talented individuals. It’s all there. And wikipedia has educated us – for all it’s inaccuracies, it’s still an incredible achievement by a collective of knowledgeable people.

There are thousands of reasons why the internet is so cool and why it should be embraced by every single person on the planet. Hopefully this has shown you a small glimpse of why it is so important too.
